There are approximately 2 million women living with breast cancer in the United States today. Unfortunately, trends show marked increase in the types of breast cancer. Currently, one out of every nine women in the United States will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This year, a breast cancer will be newly diagnosed every three minutes and a woman will die every twelve minutes. The ray of hope in these dismal statistics is that the survival rate for breast cancer is on the increase. Yet, many women with breast cancer find survival means trying to live and cope with many debilitating side effects of the disease and its treatments. Many women emerge from these treatments struggling to cope with side effects far more challenging than they ever imagined: hair loss, extreme fatigue, memory loss, prosthesis, premature menopause, diminished weight and strength are just a few examples of the physical effects they must face. Survivors must face new fears and anxieties that tear at them emotionally, as well as spiritually. Most women emerge with a new view of life and face the challenge of adjusting to new relationships with family and friends. Image Reborn strives to provide a safe and peaceful environment where women with breast cancer can come together and, through sharing common experiences, will learn that they are not alone in their paths to recovery. |
